The unique number will be store basic demographics information (gender, date of birth, parents’ name, address) and biometric information (photograph, ten fingerprints and iris) of each individual in a centralised database maintained by the Unique IDentity Authority of India (UIDAI).
Aadhaar number will replace all the identity proof documents including voters ID, ration card, PAN card, driving license etc.
The Unique ID project dubbed “Aadhaar” was launched in the tribal village, Tembhli, in Nandurbar district, Maharashtra on 29th September, 2010. The project was launched by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Rajana Sonawane, Tembhli village, was first resident to receive an Aadhaar number.
How to register an Aadhaar Unique ID Card?
Residents need to go to the nearest Enrolment Camp with certain documents (specified in the media advertisement) to register for an Aadhaar
Residents need to provide photograph and biometric scanning of ten fingerprints and eye impressions (Iris Scan)
Enrolling agency give an enrolment number upon completion
Residents will be issued an Aadhaar number within 20 to 30 days of registration date
