Hide Mutual Friends on Facebook profile and timeline?

Hide Mutual Friends on Facebook profile and timeline?
Hide Mutual Friends on Facebook profile and timeline?

Facebook recently changed their site design and I am looking to hide others from finding out mutual friends. How do I do this?

Thanks for the question. There is no way to just hide the mutual friends on Facebook, but you can hide your friends list – which will make sure that mutual friends aren’t revealed. Here’s how to do it.

Login to your Facebook account and click on ‘Account’ at the top right.
In the drop down menu that shows up now, choose ‘Privacy Settings’.

Click on ‘View Settings’ under ‘Connecting on Facebook’.

In the page that appears now, hit ‘Everyone’ (usually the default) parallel to ‘See your friend list’ and choose the appropriate setting you desire. If you are looking to hide it from everyone (including your beloved friends) choose Custom and then ‘Only Me’ under ‘These People’ in the ‘Custom Privacy’ menu.
Also, check out our post about hiding you friend list from others.
Good luck!

Change Facebook background colors.

Change Facebook background colors.
Change Facebook background colors.

I would like to change my Facebook background. Not sure it’s possible as all Facebook profiles layout look similar to me. Any clues?

I have addressed this issue in my post on how to modify your Facebook background colors. One of Facebook’s key features is the uniformly clean and non cluttered UI that makes the application easy on the eye, and thus, i believe that chances we will be able to customize the background layout color scheme of our Facebook is low. What we can do, is to leverage Mozilla Firefox, Greasemonkey and the Facebook Auto-Colorizer script in order to display custom backgrounds for all Facebook profiles and photo albums we browse. The pages color scheme is built dynamically in order to match the photos displayed in the page

Important note: This trick will only work only when you access Facebook from a Mozilla Firefox browser with Greasemonkey and the Auto-Colorizer scripts installed.

Top 5 upcoming tablets

Top 5 upcoming tablets

Eyeing the increasing competition, we may also expect manufacturers to keep the prices of expected tablets reasonable.
Despite lower than expected sales, Android tablets remain hot favourites of the handsets vendors - this further gains ground if we look at the number of tablets lined up for launch this year.

Moreover, these new tablets are likely to come with better design and features. Eyeing the increasing competition, we may also expect manufacturers to keep the prices very reasonable.

Sony Tablet P
Top 5 upcoming tablets

This one has already been announced and will be available within next 10-15 days in India. The biggest USP of this tablet is its form factor. It has two screens measuring 5 inch each; together they give you 10 inch space and when folded gives you a form factor of a large smartphone. How it performs in the market is something that needs to seen but this PSP (Playstation) certified certainly has a lot going for it.

Under the skin, this tablet houses a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 mobile processor and runs on Android Honeycomb OS. Sony P has a 5 megapixel camera at the back and a 0.3 megapixel camera in the front. It has quite a unique design and the interface is programmed to use both the screens combined and individually.

The device, with both 3G and WiFi connectivity, will cost Rs 36,990 but might not be liked by many users because in a time when high end feature phones come with around 4 GB of internal memory they would expect a tablet to have minimum 16 GB of internal storage capacity.

Asus Transformer Prime TF201
Top 5 upcoming tablets

This is another tablet with a confirmed launch date, and a unique form factor. Like its predecessor, Asus Transformer, this tablet has a keyboard docking station which transforms it into a laptop.

The tablet is going to be launched in February at a price slightly higher than its earlier version, which sold for Rs 29,999 with keyboard dock.

Transformer Prime TF201 features a 10.1 inch touchscreen display. It houses a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 mobile processor and will run on Android 3.2 Honeycomb, though Ice Cream Sandwich update already lined up for it. In terms of connectivity also, the tablet is fully loaded with 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth etc.

Samsung Galaxy 7.7
Top 5 upcoming tablets

Another tablet that is expected to be launched in a couple of months is the Samsung Galaxy 7.7, though no formal announcement has been made in this regard. This tablet will come with a 7.7 inch Super Amoled Plus display supporting 1280x800 pixel resolution. Inside, it would pack a dual core 1.4 GHz microprocessor with Mali-400MP graphics chip to power the Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system.

Samsung has added Universal Remote Control functionality in Galaxy 7.7 that will let you control your television as well as home entertainment systems through your tablet.

Samsung Galaxy 7.7 will support SIM calling and has a 3 megapixel camera at the back while a 2 megapixel one will be there in its front. It supports 3G and WiFi and will come in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB storage options along with support for micro SD card of up to 32 GB capacity. Samsung has not revealed its price yet but we expect it to be within Rs 30,000 price bracket.

Acer Iconia A200
Top 5 upcoming tablets

This one is a mid range 10 inch tablet from Acer. It boasts a 10.1-inch display with a native resolution of 1280x800 pixel, and has a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor with an integrated low-power GeForce graphic chip which is capable of playing 1080p HD videos.

The tablet runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system and will be upgraded to Android 4.0 later. In the front, Acer has only 2 megapixel front camera for HD video chats.

Acer Iconia A200 has a full USB 2.0 port, which means that it will support 3G dongles. The Iconia Tab A200 doesn't offer SIM slot and is entirely dependent on the WiFi for Internet connectivity. Bluetooth, GPS are there. It has also dual speakers for good audio experience.

While the price and availability of this tablet for India is yet to be announced, we expect it to be launched by March within a price range of Rs 20,000. The tablet has just started selling in USA for $350 (Rs 18,000 approx).

Motorola Xoom 2
Top 5 upcoming tablets

The Xoom tablet did not get the cash register ringing for Motorola. However, the company will be hoping to change this with the upgraded Xoom tablet that is loaded with many interesting features and a stylish design.

Though it is not clear as when Motorola would bring the Xoom 2 to India, but it is already being launched in phases in different parts of the world, so we can expect it to come to India within next three months.

There are two versions of the Motorola Xoom 2 tablet with screen sizes of 8.2 and 10.1 inches, but both have the same display resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels and even the same hardware. Both tablets have an LTE version and a WiFi only version. Apart from that they use a 1.2 GHz dual core processor and run on Android 3.2, which will be upgraded later.

The 10.1 inch Xoom 2 has a detachable key board as an accessory. Motorola has also included Infra-red in the tablets that helps it work as a universal remote for all your gadgets. Other connectivity options are present in full force.

You can read our hands-on here (Xoom 2 is called Xyboard in USA). Motorola Xoom 2 is expected to be priced around Rs 30,000- 40,000.

How To Add or Enable Facebook Video Chat

How To Add or Enable Facebook Video Chat

How To Add or Enable Facebook Video Chat

I was hearing all of the hype about the “exciting” new feature Facebook came out with that allowed you to have video chat with your Facebook friends. This was all made possible through a partnership with Microsoft / Skype. But when it came time to try out this new toy, there were no obvious instructions in how to access this feature! That’s 1 demerit against Facebook for not making this setup more apparent.

Let’s get into the meat and potatoes of how to enable this Facebook Video Chat feature.
1.) Go to this link: https://www.facebook.com/videocalling
2.) Follow the instructions on that page which will include downloading and installing the video chat plugin.
3.) Once it is installed properly, you will go your Facebook profile page, look at the bottom right corner where the Chat box is. Click the chat box which will expand and display your Facebook friends. If there is a green circle next to their name, that means they are online.
4.) Click on the person you wish to chat with via video. This will open a regular text chat box. In the top right corner of this little chat box you will see 3 small icons, and one of them is a camera icon. Click on that camera icon and then Facebook will try contacting that person via the chat video. If the person accepts, then you should be able to see video of yourself and the other person you are contacting. You will also notice typical features such as enlarging the video to full screen and the X close option which will end the video chat. Keep in mind, both people must already have the feature activated in order to talk via the video chat.
Unfortunately, Facebook only allows you to open a video chat with 1 person at a time.
Have fun with the video chat and always remember you are on camera…so be careful where you scratch and that you don’t start picking your nose. The person on the other end of the video chat might not appreciate it.

TwitPic is a favorite photo sharing site for many Twitter users (especially celebrities). It’s used solely for sharing pictures on Twitter. You can post pictures from your mobile phone, through any Twitter client that has Twitpic integration, or through the website itself. The best part is that you don’t have to create an account. If you already have a Twitter account, then you have a Twitpic account. To login you simply use your Twitter username and password. By logging in you can delete photos, delete comments on your photos, and delete tags on your photos. People can leave comments on your photos which are then sent out to you on Twitter in the form of an @mention tweet.

ImageShack is a free media host where you can upload images, flash files, and movies. Besides uploading directly to the site, they offer many tools that make uploading your media even easier. You can only upload one file at a time via the site; if you’re looking to upload multiple files you’ll need the ImageShack toolbar. You don’t have to worry about your images being deleted since they have plenty of storage to accommodate all users. If you personally need to delete a file, you’ll need to register (which is free) in order to do so. The amount of files that you can upload is unlimited – just be sure that they don’t break any of the TOS (terms of service). Registering will also allow you to track your images.

TinyPic is owned and operated by Photobucket.com but has less features. If you’re looking to quickly upload an image or video and get a link to share it with, TinyPic is for you. There is no registration required for the site (although you can register for additional features) and it’s totally free. Many people use it to share images on social networks like MySpace, Orkut, Hi5, etc. If you choose to register, you will then be able to upload multiple images, edit your images, add tags, delete media, and create albums. If you do not sign up for an account, your images will be removed once they haven’t been viewed for 90 days. Those with registered accounts will never have their media removed.

Pixa.us is a free hosting service for images and flash media. They also offer resizing, cropping, filtering and layout options for your photos. Registered users can upload up to 100 images at once, share images, create thumbnails, and create albums. Hotlinking is only allowed for thumbnails; you cannot directly embed the large versions of your images. As far as the amount of images you can host, it’s unlimited.

Pict lets your upload and share images (in jpg, gif and png format only) for free in one click. Their desktop application lets you upload, manage and share images and screenshots with one click. You can then get a link to your uploaded images to share with friends, families, and on other sites. The Firefox addon is just for taking screenshots; you can create screenshots from selected areas or full websites in just one click and then upload and host them on Pict. Sharing images is easy with their mouse over “share it” feature. They also provide three different types of links for sharing your images (HTML, BBCode, and direct link). Images are stored forever and the amount of images that you can upload is unlimited.

Imgur is another great site for upload and sharing images for free; it’s definitely one of the simplest image hosting tools on the Web. Once you upload your image there are numerous sharing options. You can share it directly on Reddit, Digg, Fark and Twitter or use the “Email It” link to share by email. There are six different types of links for sharing and you can get links for the original image, small thumbnail, or large thumbnail. You can also see how man views the image has, when it was submitted and how much bandwidth it’s taking up. You can even delete the image directly. All of these features are available without signing up. As long as your images are getting at least one view every three months, it will never be deleted.

Pikchur is my personal favorite for sharing images on numerous social networks at once; you can also share videos as well. Pikchur currently supports: Twitter, Tumblr, Jaiku, Facebook, FriendFeed, Identi.ca, Plurk, BrightKite, Totspo, Koornk, Flickr, OVI, and Posterous. Once you connect one of more of the aforementioned social networks, whenever you post an image on Pikchur, it will automatically be shared on all of those sites. You can upload images directly to the site, by email or from your mobile phone. They also have a geotagging feature which will let you add the location for any image; you can choose to make your location public or private. There is no need to signup because you can simply login using one of their many supported platforms. Although the service is complete free, you can upgrade to a Pro account for $23.90. With a pro account you’ll see no ads, get an expanded profile, statistics, higher image quality and more.

In case you’ve been counting, the list of online photo sharing websites has grown beyond just ten. If there’s any other photo sites we should include, drop us a note to tell us about them. Also, feel free to leave your comments below to let us know which photo sharing site is your favorite.

How to configure your Outlook GMail account

How to configure your Outlook GMail account
How to configure your Outlook GMail account

Why should I use Outlook for my Gmail address?

Although the web based system of Google Gmail is one of the most feature rich webmail platforms, you may want to handle your Gmail account & messages from a client email software program such as Microsoft Outlook. For example, if you are using other email addresses and not just the Gmail account, most likely you would want to read and handle all your email accounts from the same interface & program.

 Configuring the Outook Gmail settings.

You can configure Outlook to handle your Gmail account as a POP3 or as an IMAP account. Depending on your choice, you have to enable the related account option in your Gmail account (Gmail Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP).

Below, we will detail how to setup Microsoft Office Outlook 2000 to 2010 to send, receive and store email messages for a Gmail address. Before getting started, please make sure you know your Gmail email address and your Gmail password.
Start Outlook: from the main Outlook window, go to Tools -> Email Accounts.
How to configure your Outlook GMail account

On the Outlook popup window, select to "Add a new e-mail account" and click on Next.

How to configure your Outlook GMail account

On the server type step, select POP3 or IMAP (depending on your needs) for the Outlook email account type, then click on Next. There is no need to select the IMAP type, because the Gmail web based account will anyway keep a copy of all emails, just like an IMAP account would do.

How to configure your Outlook GMail account

On the next screen, you will have to specify your Outlook Gmail settings, such as your Gmail username and password, Gmail server addresses, Gmail server ports and Outlook Gmail display name.

On the User Information section, enter your Name (it can be anything, but remember this is going to be the name/text that people will see when you will send them an email via your Outlook Gmail account) and your Gmail email address.

On the Server Information section, enter the Google Gmail servers:

POP Gmail servers for Outlook:
- Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
- Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com.

IMAP Gmail server for Outlook:
- Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
- Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com.

As an alternative, you may setup any other outgoing mail server that you have access to, such as your ISP's SMTP server or your own hosted outgoing server. However, if you setup a 3rd party outgoing mail server, you will not have access to sent emails via your web based Gmail account panel.

On the Logon Information section, enter your Gmail User Name (which is the same as your Gmail email address) and your Gmail password. Tick the box "Remember password" in order to make Outlook to store the Gmail password, so it will not ask you about it every time when Outlook will send/receive emails for the Gmail account.

Click on the "More Settings" button and go to the "Advanced" window tab.

If you use Gmail as a POP Outlook account:
- On the "Incoming server (POP3)" field, enter 995 and mark the box "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)";
- On the "Outgoing server (SMTP)" field, enter 465 and mark the box "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)".

If you use Gmail as an IMAP Outlook account:
- On the "Incoming server (IMAP)" field, enter 993 and mark the box "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)";
- On the "Outgoing server (SMTP)" field, enter 587 and mark the box "This server requires an encrypted connection (TLS)".

For both POP and IMAP, you also have to enable the option "My outgoing mail server requires authentication" from the Outgoing Server tab.

You can also change the server timeouts period: this defines the time interval for which Outlook will wait to establish a Gmail connection, before triggering a connection error. The slower your Internet connection is, the greater period you should put.
The "Delivery" options are not important for an Outlook Gmail account: no matter what you would change here, Gmail will always keep a copy of each email on the Gmail server.

How to configure your Outlook GMail account

When you are done setting up your Outlook Gmail advanced settings, click on OK to return to the Outlook Gmail account window.

How to configure your Outlook GMail account

To verify your Outlook Gmail setup, click on the "Test Account Settings" button: this will make Outlook to attempt to login to your Gmail account and to send & receive an Outlook test email. If the test will succeed, you will notice the test email in your Outlook Inbox folder. If the test fails, Outlook will prompt you with the error messages - most likely, you didn't setup the correct server settings or the Gmail password is wrong.
